My feeling is that markets have never been more like actual markets. The difference between a modern retail trader and the fastest automated algo house is so much smaller an inconsequential relative to what, say, Jesse Livermore could do in 1912 relative to a bucket shop trader in, say Des Moines.

IMO a large source of frustration is from people who have gotten the idea (with industry & gov't help) that markets are for investing, when in reality they have never been about anything but speculating. What HFT does is expose this in a way that is pretty much indisuputable, and it can be a challenge to accept things for what they are.

All IMO, etc.
