RE:"Everyone KNOWS this, but that middle class was built with good-paying manufacturing jobs that now reside in China" Uh Bent, I'm surprised you don't get it. Those jobs became TOO GOOD paying. Especially when you add in Medical and Pensions. Plus government regulation like OSHA, Environmental.
