If the last trade is higher than the previous one, it is an uptick, if lower it is a downtick

As to up or down ticks at the close, I seem to remember reading that NASDAQ market makers and NYSE specialists will often trade a final 100 shares between themselves at either the bid or ask (yes, it is legal) to make their books look slightly better to the exchange for their own margin positions and for their bankers.

Oh why wasn't I born into a market maker family? Perhaps rrman will adopt me.
