A balanced budget amendment is simple, common sense, but it does not need to have 100,000 pages of rules and exceptions attached to it! It simply needs to say that the federal government cannot spend more money than it takes in, period!

Of course, the Washington bastards would abuse something as simple as that. They would immediate say, "well, that could mean that we cannot spend more money that we will ever take in," or some such nonsense.

It needs to be clearly spelled out that the government must have the hard cash in the coffers before any outlays can be allocated.

Of course, such a direct stipulation can be abused too, because the bastards can simply print all the money they want!

On second thought, this is a nonsense discussion because the country is ruined beyond repair and further bureaucracy cannot neutralize the evil zombies in charge! -ng-

Yes, this will end very badly someday -- hopefully soon!

Re: "Okay Buddy, I've seen the light. I've come on board.
I now support the balanced budget amendment. Let's get it done."

Great, Bill! (Took you long enough... <g>)

Now, where do your Representatives and Senators stand on voting one out?

MY STRONG OPINION: Congress (both political parties!) will *never* vote a Balanced Budget Amendment out UNLESS they become AFRAID that the people are about to BYPASS THEM and convene a national Constitutional Convention directly!

So that is EXACTLY WHAT we need to move to do.

(I predict that --- when and only when it looks like the people are about to convene a Constitutional Convention --- the Congress will with great haste pass a new Balanced Budget amendment on to the States for ratification. Congress will *not want* to be shown up as ineffectual and out-of-touch....)

Then --- once put before the States, whether after approval by congress or proposed by direct Constitutional Assembly --- I predict that, in this current national mood of deficit awareness and disgust, the Constitutional Amendment will be rapidly approved.

So... makes no difference whether it comes out of Congress or out of a Constitutional Convention, it will pass the states quickly either way.

Germany has shown the way: if Germany can amend their constitution to require (progressively, step-by-step) balanced budgets so can America.
