We could walk through the "hard" sciences and draw up a list of issues and problems in each one that are either hotly debated among leading scientists, or admittedly unknown or not solved yet. The fact that economics now is maybe where physics and chemistry were a century ago is no reason not to understand the spectrum of schools of thought and actual firm knowledge. As I said in another post, I think a lot of people just can't be bothered. They would rather have a nice story to keep them snug and warm at night.
