The flaw is that the Republicans DID NOT appeal to southerners by promising them segregation or anything of the sort.

Furthermore all the REAL SEGREGATIONIST leaders (except for two - Thurmond and Helms) stayed in the Democratic party - the Carters, Gores, Clintons, Byrds, Ervins, etc etc they remained loyal Democrats.

With the Democratic party going McGovernite, people too conservative to stomach that fell into the Republicans lap.

At the same time, the same thing was happening with formerly Democratic ethnic groups in the north like the Irish, Poles, Italians, etc.
