JohnM, I think that is a very fair view of the article.

One point - I think the geographic argument he makes sheds some light on the activities of the senate. Looking at the map, it might be possible to conclude that individual Senators (think Lincoln in Arkansas) are not all focused on just stopping Obama but also have an eye on how the people in their state actually vote or voted. This sort of explains why the Republicans are going to make additional gains in the senate in November -- they are doing what the voters want them to do.

Obama's support is concentrated, which does not hurt him in the house but does hurt him in the senate. Jay Cost seems to be saying the broad geographical voter support is needed to win in the Senate - not just concentrated urban support.
