These are just some of the reasons why the talk of democracy, stability and fighting poverty ring hollow throughout most of the ‘Muslim world’ – and indeed beyond. Control can be maintained through this same deeply unjust economic system, through playing one faction off against another, through fighting when everything else fails to work. But it is impossible to see how democracy, stability and trust can be built on such a basis. Amazing LACK of logic, as well as knowledge of regional history. It's NOT like "playing one faction off against another" is anything knew, nor is the corruption and lack of accountability. This crap has been going on for centuries, if not a millennia. The only time these people weren't poor was when they were smuggling, or pillaging, their neighbors. And the ONLY form of government that will have any impact on controlling it is a democratic system, with a strong and free press, that assists the people is maintaining accountability. Pakistan, to a lesser extent that Afghanistan, is a failed state. It's a country in the midst of a growing schism between secularists and Islamists. And I would suggest that, were it not for a fairly professional army, the country would be under the full control of the Islamists right now. And more worrying, those Islamists would have full control of an operational Nuclear arsenal. What's it worth to prevent an all-out nuclear exchange between an Islamist, Jihad motivated, Pakistan and India? Hawk
