Ed,
If I remember my econ & econ history right productivity has always been a key issue. Example after WWII US worker had highest productivity. Other countries caugh up us, and then surpassed us. That is when we got in the economic trap you described so well.

ed, I know it will hold bec. I know cpq...
that's why. cpq will not be up just bec. dow is up.
they will have another record qtr.. cpq hasn't started really streamling the last two compnaies they purchased either.
microcom and tandem. tandem had dinosaurs for systems.

the BTO program made intel suck it up this qtr.
the BTO program cost them 500 mm in sales this last qtr. but , the inventory redcution is almost over. it was a one time hit.
this hurt any relationship intel had to nasdaq and the nsadaq across the board.

cpq has already described their cuurency exposure and they say they are okay....in 4 more weeks the yrs over and cpq has it in the bag.
Boobus-Iraqus would have to bomb a cpq plant for cpq to miss it.
And , those guys couldn't bomb a fire ant mound correctly<gg>

You still have missed that productiveity did come which allowed
most companies to right-size and still cutting emplyees by 10-25% were allowed to double revenues. Then the people cut had to get job at
another compnay. You have 120k managers now making 80k.
the same is across the board... this started yrs ago..
few can demand a raise.
design engr's, information systems people with the leading edge skills, and others... the check out lady who use to make 10-15 hr was replaced by scanners and teenagers do the but now for 1/2 that salary.
So, like I've been saying. the move to information skills is a key part of prodcutivity. it also, lowered any pressure on raises.
prodcutivity through technology and differnet skill sets required and where those workers are in those skill sets. I have teenager that use a pc better than most workers at the avg. company. I they are just alittle above avg. for their pc skills with their piers...okay maybe alittle more than above avg. but soon these generation hits the workforce.
at that time corps are not going to be running classes on how to use pcs and software. you will know how to use it..or they don't need you....I guess if you are a brain surgeon you might be safe<gg>

For years cpq operations would come see me and ask "how can info. technology reduce purchase cost 40%?"...
