WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Medicare's finances have improved thanks to the landmark health-care reform law signed by President Barack Obama, but the recession has worsened the short-term outlook for Social Security, trustees of the federal entitlements said in annual reports Thursday.

Medicare's Hospital Insurance Trust Fund is expected to remain solvent until 2029, trustees said Thursday, 12 years longer than projected last year.
