Sun To Join Intel-Inside Club
(11/07/97; 8:00 p.m. EST)
By Mary Hayes, InformationWeek

Sun is working on a partnership with Intel that calls for Sun Solaris to fully support Intel's next-generation Merced chip. The companies plan to announce the agreement as early as next week, according to sources close to Sun.
Most Solaris systems are based on Sun's UltraSparc RISC chips -- a platform that could face stiff competition when Intel and Hewlett-Packard deliver the Merced chip sometime over the next two years. Merced is a hybrid of Intel's x86 technology and HP's PA-RISC chip.

Sun has already made moves to align itself with the Intel camp, announcing in August an agreement for NCR to offer Solaris/Intel servers. Scott McNealy, Sun's chairman and CEO, said last month that the company is working on similar agreements with other computer manufacturers.

In addition, Sun will announce Solaris Enterprise Server, a version of the Solaris operating system that will contain the most 64-bit capabilities to date for Solaris. Sun announced earlier this year that with the release of Solaris 2.6, it would offer modular versions of its operating system designed for specific uses. Solaris Enterprise follows a version of the operating system customized for Intranet use that was announced in July.

The company will also announce JavaOS 1.1 for the JavaStation, a version of the operating system that's compliant with the Java Development Kit 1.1. The operating system will let Sun ship this month the "full deployment" version of its JavaStation, which for the past year has been used primarily in technical pilot programs. Systems equipped with JavaOS 1.1 will be able to operate Java programs written in JDK 1.1.

Intel article in Barron's ---- A MUST READ

interactive.wsj.com

"Q. For the last few weeks, there has been considerable disagreement about hot the recent Asian economic crisis will affect demand for personal computers....Chip what's your view?

Chip Morris: Japan and SE Asia combined account for 25% of world PC consumption. You might take the whole lump and say a quarter of worl PC busienss is going to be flat for 1998, compared to 1997. You'll only have 3/4 of the world working for you. On top of that the PC industry has been showing a decline in average selling prices, with the emergence of the sub-$1000 systems. If average selling prices fall 10% and you get 20% unit growth in 3/4 of the world, and none in the rest, you get world wide revenue growth of 5%. I GUARANTEE NO ONE FACTORING THAT KIND OF NUMBERS INTO THEIR EXPECTATIONS FOR 1998"

======================
Or as Andy Grove said when asked about unit growth beyond this quarter, "No one Knows."

Well some people have a good guess.
In my crystal ball I see the longs all racing to their brokers physical locations in their automobiles in order to get their sell orders in on the day of the crash of expectations.

Paul Engel will be leading the charge.

Can someone summerize/post sections of the Intel article appearing in this weeks Barrons ?

I expect the stock to rise to $82 - $84 next week and hopefully by Tuesday if the momentum from Fridays rally continues.
Beyond that is anybodys guess. The high I expect over the next short while is $88 and then........back to the $70's.

Come January/February and I believe that we will revisit the $90 mark to fill the gap left several weeks ago. I doubt very much based on the events happening in Asia that we will see INTL at $100 anytime soon.
Long term (12 - 18 months), I believe that INTC will have another 2-1 stock split ($120). Long term investors know they have a solid company in their hands...patience will reward them handsomly.

In the meantime, short term traders can make a killing trading this mother of all semiconductor stocks. I believe the trading range over the next several weeks will be $70 - $85 based on recent trading.

V.K

P.S Good luck to all.
