I don't see much of a difference between Robert Byrd and Strom Thurmond in terms of having unacceptable views in their past. The main difference is one was a Democrat and the other a Republican, so when each died, their obituaries read very differently. One was described as a great leader and the other a segregationist.

As for McCain, I strongly suspect that his quote was taken out of context and was a description of his views toward the prison guards and not an entire race. If not, his words should be rebuked as should the words of Rev. Wright of Chicago and all racists.
