Extremely good point..

The reversal of the magnetic poles, and the period leading up to that event, is an unknown, unobserved event. We know that we're historically overdue for this to occur, but who knows what the symptoms actually will be that determine it's onset and/or consequences.

Will it be quick, and reasonably unexpected, or take its time?..

No one knows.
