If you buy $10 of IBM, you're buying from some previous owner who sold you that stock. You'd have to know what they are doing with the $10. Maybe they're a retired person selling stock to pay their rent or electric bill or pay for groceries. Maybe its someone selling stock to pay for tuition for a child or grandchild's education. Most stock of companies like IBM are likely owned by institutional investors, mutual funds, pension funds.
