Disk-drive maker Western Digital, which said earnings in its
fiscal second quarter will be well below estimates, plummeted 6 3/4
to 23 7/8.

Analysts expected Western Digital to boost earnings in the Dec. 31 quarter by 25% to 86 cents a share. Western said net will fall as low as 20 to 30 cents, citing price competition.

The stock has been a clear laggard, peaking at 54 in August before turning sharply lower. Bear Stearns cut its rating to "neutral" from "buy." The broker also lowered its rating on Segate Technology and Quantum Corp.
