Definitely Kindle. iPad as expected is impossible in bright sunlight. I think AMZN's doing a good job of capitalizing on that fact.

OTOH, iPad makes reading in the dark easy -- for people who read in bed, no light required -- my wife likes it for reading in the car when we're traveling at night sometimes.

The other big thing is battery life -- you can take a fully charged Kindle on a two-week vacation (not that I've ever had one of those...) and not have to worry about charging. Charging the iPad is pretty much a daily affair for me.
