Compaq prepares major
pre-Comdex rollout

By Karen J. Bannan, PC Week Online

Compaq Computer Corp. is extending its presence in the
server market with the release of four new servers and several
storage products.

The batch of new products -- including four new servers, two
clustering servers and various storage and interconnect
devices -- eventually could garner up to 50 percent of Compaq
sales, officials said.

The ProLiant 1200, 1600, 3000 and 5500
entry-level-to-midrange servers will be available immediately,
officials said.

The departmental-level 1200 server, priced at $2,780, ships
with one 333MHz Pentium II processor, 32MB of RAM and a
10/100 NIC (network interface card).

The 1600 and 3000, both capable of using two CPUs, ship with
64MB of RAM, a NIC, and one 266MHz or 300MHz processor,
respectively. The 1600 will cost $3,780; the 3000 will cost
$4,775.

The Enterprise-class, four-way 5500, priced at $8,470, ships
with one 200MHz Pentium Pro processor, 128MB of RAM and
a NIC.

Optional hot-plug hard drives, Smart-2 and Smart-2SL array
controllers, and redundant power supplies are sold separately.

The Houston company also will announce Monday the ProLiant
Cluster Series F server and Cluster Series S server, which are
expected to ship in the first quarter of 1998. The Series F
server will employ Fibre Channel connections; the Series S will
use SCSI connections.

Both servers will run on Windows NT and use Microsoft Corp.'s
Cluster Server software. Pricing for the servers has not been
set.

On the connectivity side, Compaq will announce that all of its
ProLiant servers will support clustering using either Ethernet or
ServerNet, an interconnect technology that came with
Compaq's acquisition of Tandem Computers Inc. earlier this
year.

In addition to the servers, Compaq will announce a variety of
entry-level and departmental tape and hard disk backup
products.

The low-end 4/8 SLR Tape drive will sell for about $500; the
12/24 DAT Tape drive will carry a $1,193 street price. Both
models will ship on Monday.

An as-yet-unnamed 18.2GB hard disk drive features hot-plug
capabilities and a 1.6-inch form factor and ships with the
company's Pre-Failure warranty. It is expected to be priced at
$2,726.

Compaq's DLT 15 Cartridge Library, Model 3570, features a
dual-channel SCSI-3 controller that supports multiple tape
devices from a single PCI slot. It can back up as much as 1
terabyte of data in a matter of hours, officials said. The
single-drive 3570 will ship for $18,182, while the dual drive is
expected to carry a $28,409 price.
