Sounds to me he was a light touch on his subjects. They were lucky to have him. Try reading up some European history of the same period. Propaganda aside, there is no argument to be made. Besides which, have you read up on the entire wiki article of the society that existed? Sounds to me they were well organised and educated.

If accused of a crime during that time would you have thrown in your luck with the justice meted out by the Songhai empire or take you pick of whichever European state of the period.
