A very good point.

One thing that was obvious to me is I was more familiar with Anglo phone Africa and the Caribbean (South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, Bahamas, Jamaica, etc.) than Francophone Africa (Senegal, Congo, Guadalupe, Martinique etc.)

Botswana and later Namibia (after it was taken from Germany after WWI) have British culture, but since there was not the immense mineral or agricultural wealth of other areas, they were not exploited as heavily, and I suspect they did not attract the highly ambitious colonialist and scoundrels. (They all went to South Africa or Hong Kong)

There are some islands that are real screw ups - Fiji, Jamaica, Haiti - but there are a large number of well run islands of all origins.
