The concept at the very early stage (1998) of air interface to carry data was to give the user this experience you are having now.

Took 12 years because it was in the hands of the entrenched interests of the European vendors: Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens and Alcatel.

They envisaged your mobile phone doing that. Not a laptop with a transceiver head.

It needed that monster of innovation, the dropout Steve Jobs, to get it to market.
