Alfy's raises money for young Snohomish woman with breast cancer

Stage 3 breast cancer.

It's a scary diagnosis for anybody. But Sarah Lien of Snohomish is only 24-years-old.

Now she's in the fight of her life - and the community is stepping up to help.

Namely, Alfy's Pizza.

Sherri Pribble-Jones, who owns the Alfy's in Granite Falls, has known Sarah and her family for a long time. They met 15 years ago under some of the worst of circumstances.

Sherri's husband was undergoing treatment for brain cancer during the same time that Sarah's mom, Barb, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

During one particularly difficult radiation treatment, Sarah's father invited Sherri over for dinner.

Shortly after, Sherri's husband died. But her friendship with Sarah's family continued to blossom.

Years later, Barb was re-diagnosed with breast cancer.

After a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, "we celebrated and thought the journey was finally done," Sherri said.

But a week later, Sarah got her diagnosis.

"Sarah told me she never thought she would be dealing with cancer at only 24-years-old," said Sherri. She almost immediately underwent aggressive treatment.

Sherri says Sarah just finished up with chemotherapy, and the tumors are nowhere to be found. But doctors told Sarah her best bet for longevity is to have a double mastectomy and radiation.

Although things are looking up, the bills continue to pile up. Sherri tells me there are so many costs that insurance doesn't cover.

Alfy's in Granite Falls has been raising money for Sarah - and the biggest fundraiser yet is coming up. On Wednesday, August 18, every Alfy's in Snohomish County will donate $5 to Sarah for every large or extra large pizza bought.
