While it's very true that Europe has successfully developed a lot of modern and fast (heavily state subsidized) train transportation for passengers, my statement still stands, that Europe has in no way succeeded in getting the goods off the roads and on the railway.

This is still a big political issue and a main one for the green parties.

The highways are de facto long storage lots for trucked goods being delivered JIT to whereever it is needed.
Except for weekends, when trucks are often banned from the highways for good reasons, the rightmost lane more often that not look like large truck parking lots.
