The Tribune (2/8/07) reports that a Chicago taxi medallion -- a license to operate a taxicab in the City-- now costs $77,000...

As far as cost, a taxi in Chicago is generally on the road 16 hours a day. City maintained roads... including repairs, cleaning, police and other traffic control, signs and lights, stop lights, snow removal... all hugely expensive. Do you propose that that profitable use of the streets not be taxed? Or taxed the same as a regular commuter that isn't making money using the roads?

As for controlling the medallions, all those cabs and their meters are inspected. You want to ride in any uninspected cab? With any price the Cabbie wants to dial in? With 1000's of different cab companies there would be no telling what nutcase might be behind the wheel.
