No way in Hell they had enough capital left to avoid liquidation

With the debt pushed off and likely canceled by the bankruptcy their capital needs would be much lower. The lasted without any sort of bailout until near the very end of the Bush administration, they could have just gone through the bankruptcy 6 months earlier, or they could have taken the loan and used it to pay for operating through the bankruptcy rather than using it to delay bankruptcy while they lost more money.

Even later its not a foregone conclusion, they could have survived. If done earlier its likely they would have lasted through bankruptcy.
