Its natural when you consider the only association with religion he had in his youth was the four years he spent living as part of Lolo Soetero's family in Indonesia. Though Soetero wasn't devout, he did go to the mosque and took Barack with him, registered him as Muslim in a school in which he had religious classes. Shallow maybe, but it was something and I'm sure it was on the whole positive. Obama's mother was an atheist and a strange person. His grandparents were non-religious too. Islam in SE Asia is more laidback and relaxed than in the ME .... or at least was till the Saudi money (training religious leaders, building mosques) began having its impact. The experience in Indonesia probably accounts for the warmth and enthusiasm he shows toward Muslims and Islam. I've come to the conclusion he's a secret inactive Muslim though I don't think this is driven by any deep spirituality or a relationship with God, rather I think its an emotional attachment to the most normal people he knew in his youth - he thinks of them as his people. And I think he assumes Muslims in general are like those he knew in Indonesia long ago. JMO anyway.
