Good News - Jobless Rate Slides to 24-Year Low Friday November 7 6:06 PM EST By Caren Bohan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. unemployment tumbled to a 24-year low amid brisk hiring in October, the government said Friday, portraying the economy as a pillar of strength despite shaky world financial markets. The jobless rate fell to 4.7 percent in October, the lowest since during the Nixon administration when it registered 4.6 percent in October 1973, the Labor Department said.
