uh-uh. A means to have massive buying is always provided by mutual fund and pension-plan inflows at 2:30-3:00. I think you misunderstood me anyway, they're setting up short sales on specific S&P stocks. They want to dump them in a lower market next week after the necessity of window-dressing the index for the weekend has gone. I do not think we will get a higher market on Monday after the mess Korea made this weekend. We'll see on Sunday night.

I like the short covering theory. Just the opposite of last few years when Friday afternoon drop was the Bulls locking in profits over the weekend. Now it is the shorts covering to lock in THEIR profits.

Richard, >>As another explanation for the 3:30 - 4:00pm pop-up, how about short covering? Many traders not wanting to carry their profitable positions over a weekend.

The word on the street was a fair amount of Fridays action was program buying and selling. It is my understanding this activity occurs based in the difference between futures and cash. If this is true then the movement in futures and cash prices could have been the factors that moved the markets on Friday.

Now the question could be what is moving these items.

RE: "... your theory that the upswing on Friday afternoon was due to the BIG guys driving up the market so they can sell into a higher market on Monday,..."

I will need more information before I believe that is true.

RE: "... As another explanation for the 3:30 - 4:00pm pop-up, how about short covering? Many traders not wanting to carry their profitable positions over a weekend."

That sounds more likely to me, but I'm still open to suggestions.

Best wishes,
