Barack Obama is not a Muslim, okay people?

Lots of conservatives like to say that Barack Obama is a socialist. I’m not going to spend any time here debating what the label means, or whether it applies to Obama (or to Republican politicians who supported the bailout of corporate America). But it’s a lot easier to argue that Obama is a socialist than it is to argue he is a Muslim.

He is not a Muslim. He does not espouse Islamic ideas about the family, the economy, or anything else. If he were a Muslim, he would definitely be on his way to hell. In his financial dealings, he does not adhere to Sharia restrictions on interest. He supports abortion on demand and gay rights. He drinks alcohol, even in public. He eats (and probably smokes) during the daytime in Ramadan. His wife appears in public with bare arms. He lets himself be photographed and drawn in pictures. He owns a dog.

Among those who think Obama is a Muslim, 26 percent approve of his performance

Pew provides a party breakdown of its poll, 18 percent of whose large sample believed Obama to be a Muslim.

Among those who believe Obama is a Christian, 62 percent approve and 29 percent disapprove of his performance. Among those who believe he is a Muslim, 67 percent disapprove and 26 percent approve. Among those unsure (the largest group), he clocks in at 44-40.

A few more Obama-religion numbers that aren’t getting enough attention:

* Only 46 percent of Democrats believe Obama is a Christian, down from 55 in March 2009. 41 percent of Democrats are “not sure” about his religion.

* Blacks are tied with Catholics as the group most uncertain about Obama’s religion (46 percent).

* Moderate-to-liberal Republicans are the least likely to believe Obama is a Christian (26 percent).

* The biggest loss of faith in Obama’s Christianity has come among White Catholics. Between March 2009 and August 2010, they went from 61 percent to 35 percent belief that Obama is Christian in Pew’s poll.

Other neat stuff:

* White Catholics are more Republican today than they have ever been (50 percent).

* The biggest change in party since 2008 is among Jews — 33 percent Republican this year, as opposed to 20 percent in 2008.

* Evangelicals are more Republican in 2010 (69 percent) than they have been since Pew’s polling began. They are also the group most certain they will vote in 2010 (74 percent).

* Hispanic Catholics reached their lowest level of Republican affiliation (20 percent) in 2008, and have only slightly ticked upward since then (22 percent).
