how do liberal minds get into the sad and dangerous condition they are in?

Lorne, i believe i know the answer, although at first it might seem unrelated.

the answer lies in KNOWING freedom and free markets. to see fundamentally that they work and they are the only things that bring prosperity and raise the standard of living for everyone, including the poorest among us. believing in them is not enough. it's not enough because one can fooled by slick socialist rhetoric and the tug of desire to 'do good'.

one has to be able to see that socialism is evil at it's core. that's because the essence of socialism is theft. and the wrongness of theft can't be voted on, just like the wrongness of rape can't be voted on. they are wrong period.

i used to be card carrying republican and i didn't know that i was still a liberal. i thought i was a conservative. but certain socialist policies were attractive because i thought society needed them. i was a fool. a card carrying republican fool. i claimed i believed in the free market but didn't even understand how it worked.

free market principles will work if followed. proven principles save us the time of discovering the truth again. the problem is that if we don't know what the free market is and how it works we can be fooled by nice sounding superficial socialist rhetoric. but once we understand the free market and how it works we won't be fooled again.

so unfortunately, i think the only way out is through education. and that's tough because no one likes to be forced to learn anything. especially economics.

and i think knowing basic economics inevitably leads to political freedom and personal and property rights.

i know free markets work, and i know freedom works. the socialists/communists can't fool me anymore.
