I ran Seatools on my external Seatgate hard drives and my Hitachi in my Lenovo notebook was a diagnostic from Lenovo. I think it did 10 tests on the drive took about 30 minutes, could have been longer.

The longest test I had on a hard drive was my Dell Inspiron 4100 notebook I bought back in 2001. The full diagnostic for the hard drive was 4 hours, it failed. I put a new drive in it. Didn't really need to do the diagnostic on it, it was making bad clunking sounds, so it was obvious it was dying.
