I was wondering if anyone had an opinion of tomorrow's fast track vote and what effect it will have on next week's market depending on the outcome?

Well, if it's opinions you want, coming to SI is definitely the right place. :-)

My own thought is that we have two events tomorrow (who the heck knows what's going on with Iraq- that's a wild card, a possible "external shock", as they call it)- South Korea will weigh us down in the morning- and then it comes to fast track. If it fails to pass, we're down big time, IMO. But I have to believe that arms were bent this weekend to the breaking point, and I'll be really surprised if it fails to pass. But, assuming it does pass, I really don't think there will be much market effect. So, my scenario for tomorrow is down somewhat (< 1%), or down sharply (easily over a hundred points).

But when all is said and done, keep in mind Cicero who said he failed to understand how one soothsayer could ever look another soothsayer in the eye without laughing. :-0

RE: I was wondering if anyone had an opinion of tomorrows fast track vote..."

I'm all for "Free Trade." However, regarding Fast Track, I'm not sure whether I would like to take the power for determining trade policies away from Congress and give it to the President. In this case, Clinton says he will use Fast Track to promote free trade. But, remember that the power could also be used the other way. A president could apply the power provided by Fast Track to implement a protectionist policy.

Best wishes,

I2

Re: fast track. It is my opinion it will pass. The folks that are hold outs need a kick back to bring home to states where voters need to be convinced the represenative received a deal for perceived lost jobs. The White House will cook any deal it has to for passage.
