Thanks for the feedback re: ethics of profiting from the mis-fortunes of others. We have teased apart and analysed so many issues related to the market that I felt that addressing this was worth a post or two. I never thought the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition would have real world application. Ha! Truth IS stranger than fiction.

Interesting article from Nikkei Daily News that refers to evaporation of "latent profits" of Japanese bank stock holdings. My take on this is that the cost basis of their holdings has been averaged.
Year to date loss of "latent profits" (capital gains?) of 20 major banks equals 5.4 trillion yen. Ouch!
