I see some people applauding the drop to 473,000 new unemployment claims. However, this doesn't take into account that many of the terminally unemployed had exhausted their benefits and applied last week hoping to get more benefits, but were denied. So actually there was no change in the enormous rate of new claims.

Every week more and more unemployed are dropped from the rolls. This does not show the unemployment picture very well unless you look at it from the perspective of simply near a half million more newly unemployed every week.
