November 11, 1997 09:41 AM
CALGARY, ALBERTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1997--QSound Labs, Inc. QSNDF Sharp Corporation, one of the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturers, has chosen QSound Labs' QSNDF QSurround (TM) audio technology for its next generation of virtual home theatre and consumer audio products.
The recently signed royalty-based license agreement will provide consumers world-wide, with QSound-enhanced products beginning in 1998. These products will include new lines of mini-component systems and audio receivers for DVD and Pro-Logic home theatre systems.
"Having QSound Labs' 3D Audio technology chosen for all of Sharp's future virtual audio products, is very rewarding," said David Gallagher, President of QSound Labs. "It is a true testament of QSound(R)'s quality and the Company's leadership role in the 3D audio arena."
QSurround is the key enabling technology for playback of DVD multi-channel audio, providing accurate audio positioning from two speakers. It effectively meets the challenge of new multi-channel audio delivery formats and enables decoded Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Pro Logic or MPEG 2 information to be reproduced across the entire range of playback systems. By creating "virtual speakers", QSurround reproduces the full surround sound effect of multi-channel audio so that surround sound encoded movies and music can be enjoyed with only two speakers.
QSurround is certified by Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation for both Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital process. It was derived from the efficient QSound (R) algorithm which unlike other 3D audio technologies was developed for playback over loud speakers. By concentrating directly on the target environment; human perception of sound location through two speakers, QSound Labs developed the world's most natural-sounding, effective and inherently efficient positional 3D audio algorithms. The Company has also developed HRTF-based solutions for playback over headphones.
