Hong Kong to licence disc production equipment.......................

(07/November/1997)

Hong Kong, November 7 (CNS) -- A revised Import and
Export (General) Ordinance has been issued by the Trade
Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region (SAR) government.

This covers the licensing of disc production equipment and,
if approved by the Provisional Legislature, it will become
effective on December 29.

The Information Service said the revised decree was gazetted
today and would be presented to the Provisional Legislature
next Wednesday, to be approved should no objections be
raised by legislators.

A spokesman for the Trade and Industry Bureau said the
proposed licensing was one of the measures adopted by the
SAR government to stop Hong Kong being known as place
for pirated discs.

Customs and Excise Department officials will also be helped
by the decree by tracing the origin and destination of
imported disc production equipment and they may also more
easily collect intelligence on suspect activities.

It will be illegal to import or export disc production
equipment without a valid licence, the decreed states, and
penalties will be a maximum fine of HK$2m and seven
years imprisonment.

The spokesman said a simple and direct licence had been
worked out and the application was free of charge.
