Are you talking about references you put in your own writings or references you want for something that has no references? Grove was dismayed to find that in medical papers the authors did not include data from the work of others as comparison to show how their data differed. In the physical sciences at least, it is expected that, if possible, one includes data from earlier work either as supporting the new work or for showing incorrect conclusions of the earlier work.
