Just what the conversion factor between Imperial units And S.I. happened to be.

An Imperial gallon was originally the volume of 10 lbs of water. A liter was the volume of 1 kg. of water

1 L of water = 2.2 lbs (2.2 lbs/kg)
2.2 lbs x 4.546 = 10 lbs which is weight of 1 Imperial gal. of water.

Numbers aren't exact.
