When I worked for the climate people, they would typically call the three months of "summer" JJA, (June, July and August) in quarterly averaging. The other three seasons were comprised of SON (fall), DJF (winter), and MAM (spring). This recognized the delay of temperature relative to sun position and the fact that we calculated monthly averages so were just doing the most convenient thing. September 21st is probably well into "fall" when you think about it. CD
