DIRECT costs of "$709 billion" ignore the costs that are still in-trained, (yet to be paid for but inevitable), such as veterans' lifetime health care costs, interest on the money that was borrowed to finance ongoing expenditures, re-arming costs to replace equipment, forgone opportunity costs... and the not-so-insignificant fact that we are STILL running up expenses in 'Mess-o-potamia', and will be for many years yet to come. Get back to it in five years or so and you will be able to sum up a more comprehensive total. (If your memory can extend that far that is, Bill....)
