Burkina Faso Minister of Mines launches country’s fifth gold mine

mbendi.com

Burkina Faso’s Minister of Mines, Abdoul Kader Cissie, attended the opening celebrations that marked the launch of the Inata gold mine project in the country’s northern Sahel Region on 28th April 2008. Exploration has identified the Region’s enormous potential for gold production and Norwegian company Wega Mining, under the mining convention, owns 90% and the Government of Burkina Faso 10% percent of the project. Banlaw Africa is the main Earthworks and Civils contractor.

Wega Mining chief executive officer Lars Marius Furu welcomed the Minister, members of the government, the Regional Governor and distinguished guests together with local people who had gathered to witness the event. The project will bring many benefits to Sahel including a new water barrage, vastly improved infrastructure and jobs for local communities.

The Minister of Mines addressed the gathering and announced that after Taparko, Kalsaka, Youga and Mana, Inata was the fifth goldmine in Burkina Faso to start construction. He commended the exploration and development efforts noting that 25 tonnes of gold would be mined during the nine-year exploitation period. Wishing the project every success and officially declaring the launch of the construction works, he took over the controls of a Banlaw Africa Caterpillar earthmover to signify the occasion.

Wega Mining’s interest in Burkina Faso derives from its acquisition of Goldbelt Resources and its Burkina Faso subsidiary, Societe des Mines de Belahouro S.A. in December 2007.
