Super Pit keeps largest gold producer title

Kalgoorlie's Super Pit mine has retained its ranking as the country's largest gold producer.

Latest figures show a massive 758,000 ounces of gold was produced from the operation in the 2009-2010 financial year, which is up 20 per cent on the same period last year.

The survey of gold miners shows that overall gold production in Australia during the June quarter rose to its highest level in six-and-a-half years.

Managing director of surveying company Surbiton Associates, Sandra Close, says production jumped 11 per cent alone compared with the March quarter.

"A lot of the long established producers increased their output significantly," she said.

"There was higher output from commissioned operations that are still ramping up, but as well we had several new operations starting up in the quarter and that included Edna May, Bronzewing and also White Dam in South Australia."

Ms Close says in monetary terms gold continues to rank as one of Australia's top export earners.

"I think a lot of people don't really realise that gold has been one of our major exports for some considerable time now," she said.

"It used to be around $5 billion a year for many years - now we're up to the $10 or $11 billion mark at current spot prices ... that's a very nice little earner."
