There was an interesting program on History last night concerning the Sahara. Every 20,000 years there is a slight bobble in the Earth's orbit, just enough to push the rains north, making the Sahara lush and green. The last "change" occurred approximately 7000 years ago, so we have 13,000 years to go for another.

Underneath the Sahara lies huge lakes of fresh water, the size of the United States.
