Oil anywhere but in the ground pollutes the environment, and, sometimes, the stuff in the ground decides to spontaneously pollute, too, eg La Brea Tar Pits and seeps in the Gulf. Even if nothing drips anywhere else, burning it adds to the atmospheric CO2 load.
