Nor is it a subject area where I have something to contribute. To contribute I would need to put in considerable effort. Why would I do that? I do research and analysis on topics that interest me. Life is short. I see no utility in my spending time and energy researching things that don't interest me. I haven't researched Nascar, animal husbandry, Lindsay Lohan, red giants, 4G cell phones, or growing coconuts. Or health care in countries beyond those upon which health care reform was potentially modeled. Because I have no reason to. You suggested a new topic for discussion. Just as posters are free to ask whatever questions they like, posters are free to introduce a new topic. There is no corresponding obligation to answer those questions or to engage on a proposed topic. Someone ringing our phone does not obligate you to answer it. The other day there was a discussion about units of measure--gallons and liters and quarts. I did not join that discussion BECAUSE IT DID NOT INTEREST ME AND I HAD NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE. Had some participant in that discussion asked me "Lane, what about Canadian gallons?" I would have responded. I would have responded because my standard of courtesy calls for me to respond to direct questions asked in good faith, not because I care about the topic or have anything to contribute to the discussion. Re your proposed new topic, I wrote that I would engage if you could suggest to me some utility in it. I knew of none. I also wrote that I would give you the courtesy of a reply if you posted to me with an opening point on that new topic. There's always the chance that your statement might pique my interest and trigger further engagement. Those were the conditions for my willingness to engage with you as a courtesy despite my lack of interest or potential for contribution. You chose not to take me up on those limited offers of engagement. Instead you complain that I "haven't looked." But the ball is in your court, not mine.
