Irrational exuberance is one potential threat to the revival in this industry, said several analysts. Another might be a global economic slowdown or problems in Asia that might keep anticipated demand from developing there. "Two-thirds to three-quarters of demand in the future is going to be driven by the rapidly emerging economies of Asia," noted Baker Hughes's Flaharty.

"Looking back at the air pocket that the stock market hit because of currency weakness in Asia, Flaharty said he still anticipates growing demand in those economies. "I can't help but wonder if there weren't 1.2 billion Chinese who woke up that day who didn't know a thing about the market and who still wanted cars." "
