"Echoing back what I think you're saying....you feel the continent should be laced with an abundance of optical fiber, with equal access (however that's defined, is something "X cents per gigabyte-hour" etc ok?) to all, much like a modern version of the old post office. And whatever inefficiencies result from the "socialized" running of this network will be more than offset by the explosion of relatively unfettered economic activity that will be enabled by this egalitarian network...?"

[1] "you feel the continent should be laced with an abundance of optical fiber, with equal access (however that's defined, is something "X cents per gigabyte-hour" etc ok?) to all"

Yes.

[2] "...much like a modern version of the old post office"

No.

[3]"...And whatever inefficiencies result from the "socialized" running of this network..."

Your imputation, not mine.

[4]"...offset by the explosion of relatively unfettered economic activity that will be enabled by this egalitarian network..."

A negative and sardonic view. If one interprets the network as an essential service like telephony, the question of economic gain becomes secondary. However, it's reasonable to conclude that unfettered access to information will be an economic stimulus, if other economic preconditions exist.
