This offering from Oak becomes the first available AC'97-compliant dual codec, combining five key functions within a single chip package. In addition to combining audio and modem functions, the OTI-612 has an integrated headphone amplifier, tone control, circuit-side DAA (Data Access Arrangement) support from Krypton Isolation, Inc., and direct isolation transformer drive capability. Crucial to this introduction is Oak's ability to package into one chip those features which typically exist within separate components as well as reduce circuit complexity and ultimately, OEM component costs. OTI-612 MODIFIES AUDIO EXPECTATIONS AND DELIVERABLES Within its single package design, the OTI-612 allows digital audio signals to be converted to analog data output while also allowing analog audio sources to be digitized for capture and processing within a PC. The modem functionality of the codec allows digital data to be converted into audio tones for transmission across regular P.O.T.S. (plain old telephone service) lines and vice versa. For on-line gaming and entertainment, this combination of features and design integration is not only essential, but highly desirable. The audio codec permits simultaneous recording and playback of stereo audio. The modem codec permits full duplex data operation (transmit and receive) simultaneously. Both codecs operate independently of each other and can also be used simultaneously. In addition, Oak has become one of the first manufacturers to integrate the Krypton circuit-side DAA. This design allows OEMs to reduce component count when incorporating the Krypton world programmable solid state DAA into their modem designs, thereby creating a single modem design that can be produced and used worldwide.
