I find the funds going to the Tennesee colleges to train doctors, nurses, and dentists to be very exciting, and a long term big plus for the country

If you examine the displaced US workers from say Ohio when their jobs got shipped, their retraining would not consist of making them dentists. The lathe worker's retraining would be more in line with development of computer skills such as CAD/CAM, medical technician, pharmacists' assistant etc. etc. Besides, the public wants instant results and not long term.

As to money going to welfare programs, Medicaid received a disproportionately heavy dose of funding instead of infrastructure projects. If people have jobs, they remain busy and they don't fall sick as much as they do if they have nothing to do.

I can see Obama's point that the stimulus money saved jobs instead of providing new ones. Unfortunately, our reward system rewards those who demonstrate the ability to pull a situation from a bad one and improves it. It does not reward someone who prevents a situation from becoming worse. And that is where Obama is today.
