Pete:

I wish I could recall what the average NYSE trading volume was back in 1990, but I can't. I do recall that the low-volume testing process occurred with 200 million share volume.

It seems to me that 200 mil may hae been roughly 1/2 of average trading volume, so your estimate of 400 mil today may be a good one.
