Unions do matter, in the public sector they are powerful, and they are even more of a drag on the economy now than when they where primarily in the private sector.

Sometimes private sector unions have increased the compensation of the union workers in a specific job situation, but that represents a cost to the rest of the economy, helping to push down the real compensation of other employees.
